PN: Labour promised a gas pipeline by 2026
Not yet checked Not yet checked
The claim
“The Government must immediately publish the price, conditions and all guarantees linked to the new LNG supply agreement with BP.”
Partit Nazzjonalista (statement, 22 Jun 2026): after the Prime Minister announced a gas supply agreement with BP, the Government 'has signed an agreement for just nine months' without giving the price, and 'the Labour Government had promised that by this year Malta would have a pipeline for gas supply so that the country would no longer depend on the tanker in Marsaxlokk. But here too, it has failed.'

Context
Italpress/MNA (22 Jun 2026) reports the deal covers fuel for Delimara until the end of May 2027 and that the SOCAR Trading contract expires on 13 August 2026; from 13 August to the end of May is about nine and a half months, from the announcement about eleven, so 'nine months' depends on the start date. Enemalta is reported to have said the contract is priced against the TTF benchmark and that a process with seven international bidders preceded it. The Energy Minister is reported to have called it a temporary measure on expert advice (MaltaToday, search summary). Labour's 2026 manifesto (pledge MP-PL-2026-16-7 in data/manifesto_pledges.csv) says hydrogen-ready gas pipeline studies are complete; the earlier pipeline promise's wording has not been located.
Limitations
Candidate from the weekly intake of 18 Oct 2026. The claimant is the Opposition; the subject is a Government pledge and contract. 'Management by crisis' and the transparency demand are opinion and are not tested. The statement is 118 days old at intake. Related to CC-095, CC-113 (energy cost) and CC-027 (power cuts) in subject.
What it will be tested against
Wording of Labour's earlier gas-pipeline promise (2017 and 2022 manifestos; data/manifesto_pledges.csv; Government statements on the pipeline project, EU Projects of Common Interest list); Enemalta and Government announcement of the BP agreement (term, start date); status of the Malta-Italy gas pipeline (European Commission PCI list, Eurostat); the 21 Jun 2026 power cuts (CC-027, CC-090) for the 'candles and fans' remark, which is context, not the claim.

Linked directly 3
Claims that share a theme with this one. A theme is a cause, a mechanism, a target or a way of presenting figures that the editors have found in several claims; its strength says how close the link is.
Energy supply security Shared target · Weak (indicative)
Claims about whether Malta's power and gas supply is secure and on time: the second interconnector (CC-023), the July 2026 power cuts (CC-027), Enemalta's investment ahead of demand (CC-028) and the Opposition's claim on the BP gas contract and the missing gas pipeline (CC-126). Indicative until a report tests them.
