Who said it

Bodies and people

Every claim is matched to the body or person who made it: 67 bodies and 13 people so far, from government and its agencies to parties, NGOs, business and the media. Every side is held to the same standard.

How to read the cards

  • Verdict bar from 5 checked claims: how many checks ended in each verdict, as counts.
  • Tentative balance at 3 or 4: where the checks so far sit between Contradicted and Supported, recent claims counting more (by the date of the claim, not of the check). Work in progress, not a rating. How it is worked out.
  • Pledges keep their own labels (on track, off track, not measurable…), always shown, never mixed into the verdicts.

Pledges, election by election

Pledges are made in bursts, around elections, so each disk is an election cycle: the election and the legislature after it, the newest on top. Campaign pledges (manifestos, campaign promises) sit on the outer ring, commitments made in office inside. Each square is a pledge, coloured by its label, with a dot inside in the colour of the verdict on the facts it rests on, where those were checked. Pledges on the same topic sit at the same place on every disk, so similar pledges line up; lines join them across the cycles, coloured by the average verdict of their facts (dashed: none checked yet). Targets set by agencies (not political promises) are listed on their bodies' cards, apart from the pledges.

Patterns by kind of body: which pattern tags, verdicts and topics turn up in claims by each kind of body, and what each side said, when, on each issue.

On the claims web, group the claims by Who said it to see the same register as a constellation: each kind of body is a hub, each body orbits it, and people sit beside the body they spoke for.
