About

Glyph key

Every kind of thing in Miżien has a small picture of its own, so it can be recognised before a word is read, the way a map's icons are chosen. 129 glyphs cover the topics, subtopics, verdicts, pledge labels, kinds of body, themes and places; 9 are shared on purpose.

How the glyphs are chosen

  • One silhouette for each kind of thing. Two different things never share a glyph. The site checks this every time it is built.
  • The same thing looks the same everywhere. A subtopic has the same glyph in the claims web, on the map, in the filters and on a claim's page.
  • Shared where the idea is the same. A theme that is the pattern "Selective metric" uses that pattern's glyph; a bus terminus on the map uses the bus.
  • Colour and shape say different things. A claim's colour is its verdict; the glyph says what kind of thing it is, and the verdict glyphs repeat the verdict so it can be read without colour.
  • Bodies share the glyph of their kind. The register of bodies is open-ended and neutral, so no body gets an emblem of its own that could read as a logo or an endorsement.

  • Misleading · 7 claims
  • Contradicted · 2 claims

Pledge labels

A pledge gets a label instead of, or as well as, a verdict. The flag means "a pledge"; each label has a shape of its own.

  • A pledge (plain flag)
  • Not measurable
  • Not yet due
  • On track
  • Off track
  • Met
  • Missed

Patterns

Recurring ways a claim can mislead (provisional until a report is finished).

Adding a glyph

The glyphs are one file, site/assets/glyphs.js, read by the claims web, the map, the filters and these pages. A new topic, subtopic, pledge label or place emblem needs a glyph in the right group there; until it has one it shows its parent's, and the build log says which are missing.
